I'm trying to find the year of a 9.9 I bought, serial No.BABS1002394, I looked in the chart and came up with it being a 1987. Is that correct? The guy I bought it from said it was a 2001. C'mon guys, help me out. Also it does not idle properly, I was thinking of cleaning the carb. Can I just buy carb cleaner, take it apart and clean it, put it back together? Is there gaskets that need to be replaced? What is in a carb kit? Would I need one only if something is damaged? I've never done much maintenance on small engines, it's time for me to learn.

That serial is a 1987 model.
Removing and cleaning carb is probably whats needed, as far as parts probably just gaskets.
