Default tool for tilt/trim cylinder

The tilt/trim cylinder on my BF40A sprung a leak and I'm not sure how to get the top off the cylinder. The ring is hexagonal but Honda does not make a tool to fit into it. Will a face spanner such as the ones at sears.com fit in the little holes in the top and is this a safe (ie. won't break anything) way to get it off? Thanks for any help.

Is it possible to use a chain wrench or strap wrench to remove the cap?

If trying to replace seal in reservoir(oil tank) then need to unscrew end(upper metal joint) off of cylinder shaft.

Yes but it has a hexagonal inner ring where a special wrench would fit but where can I get such a wrench? It also has little holes in the cap so would a face spanner take it off? Or the chain or belt wrench?

There has been a couple of different style power trim units used on the 40hp over the years and would need to identify which unit it has in service manual to find which tools are needed. If you have the manual it will list tool part numbers.

The manual has been ordered so I will check it out. The Honda dealer where I first took the boat when I had the problem said Honda does not make a tool to take it off. Does this sound reasonable? It it's true, where would I be able to order it? I have taken the boat back from the dealer and will try to do it myself. It's a 2006 BF40A motor BAYS3601610.
