Starter may be dragging and not turning fast enough to engage, that may be from low voltage due to bad battery, bad wiring or bad starter. Starter bendix drive could be sticking or bad, try oiling bendix drive.

Oiled bendix drive , charged battery to full charge . Starter will still run , touches flywheel and drops back . Changed solenoid , no change. Could bendix be weak , is this a replaceable item or replace starter . Any ideas

Bendix could be bad or starter is still not turning fast enough to engage bendix, if not sure which probably replace starter.

Should the starter rotate in a clockwise direction or counterclock wise direction ? The arrow on the flywheel indicated clockwise. The starter also rotates in a clockwise rotation .

Reversed battery cables , starter motor now turns counterclock wise at it should . Replaced flywheel , motor cranks ok . Thank you very much . Positive ground motor - now that is a good trivia question . Thank you again for solving a problem that has had us stumped .
