Default Oil Pressure Light - How to test ?

I have an early 90's BF8A. The oil pressure light does not come on but the motor appears to be running fine. Before I go out and spend $40 on a light, I would like to know how to test it to make sure it is the light and not the pressure switch or, heaven forbid, an actual lack of oil pressure.

I removed the light assembly and connected to a 12 volt battery - no light. I then connected the leads of my voltmeter to the leads going to the light assembly. I get about 32 volts with the engine in idle. Is this normal ? How else can I check this light assembly ?
