My fuel pump filled my engine with gas
Today I made it about a mile from the dock, my '99 40hp Honda started running funny, I pulled up to an island, it was idling high. One thing led to another, turned out the entire engine was full of gasoline. Pulling the dipstick out causes a guyser over 6" tall. I was lucky to have a friend at home who was able to come rescue us and tow us back in. I see they don't sell a kit for it, the pump is over $100. So I'm thinking I'll go to an electric low pressure pump, at least it won't fill the engine. There is a diaphram in the Honda pump that must have split wide open, maybe ethanol?? I try to avoid it but there have been times when it was all I could get. Anyone else had a failure like this?? I've seen one other back in the 60s on a two stroke, it was vaccum operated and it filled the block also. The Honda pump has a push rod actuator, seems like they would put a weep hole or drain rather than letting the fuel go into the crankcase. I had checked the oil this morning, it was perfect, clean and full. Any info or thoughts appreciated. I've got a 20hp Honda with over 1200 hours with a similiar pump, and I trust it in places where I wouldn't want to be without engine........ Woody
