Default which impeller for b100 s 1502329

I have a 1983 model honda 10 horse. i was wondering if there are any specific things to look for when changing the impeller? changing one a year seems like alot, but i am hitting occasional sandbars in the shallow wapsipinicon river in eastern iowa. the shop got me the wrong one the first time; i dont need an impeller key, its flat on one side. second one fit fine. so, did i get the right part, do i need to install the impeller a certain way, is there any other spots within the shaft that would cause the pump to not perform correctly? could the winter have rotted out the rubber if there was still water in there? i had a mariner for the last 4 years, newbie for the hondas!
Update; The impeller has normal wear. All of the blades are still there, and the housing is like a mirror. What next? I have the side cover taken off that houses the thermostat. Nothing clogged on the thermostat, the housing looks fine. Would the tube going to the pump be clogged?
