Howdy...My friend has a 15 horse power Honda 4 stroke outboard that will only run with the choke on or my hand over the intake. It is getting fuel to the fuel pump and while cranking the engine fuel does come out of the fuel pump but does not seem to me to be under much pressure. We wanted to take the boat out today and may have to take it to a mechanic. The problem is this lake if really popular and the mechanics may be backed up. Any ideas? Thanks.

The carb needs to be removed and cleaned.

My 15hp Honda also does not idle. It will run if choked but the choke lever has a cam that breaks the butterfly open (hence NOT idle). Just finished cleaning the carb. No change (but cleaner now).

Reckon it's an air leak in the intake but all my gaskets are clean.

The PILOT SCREW: is that also known as the IDLE MIXTURE ADJUSTMENT SCREW? If so, the factory manual shows an o-ring between the spring and the carb but other diagrams in this website show it after the spring. I found mine after the spring. Doesn't look like it would even seal.

Anyhow I tried it in both positions - no change.

Starts fine when choked but has the high RPM's. Just means no trolling for me... Anybody have the solution to this?

hey!

I am dealing with the same problem on a 5hp.

Starts like a champ choked, runs smooth at fast (non-choke) idle but as soon as I lower throttle to low the motor stalls.

Carb has been off and cleaned.

BTW, I screwed around with air idle mixture screw earlier so I am not sure if it's in the correct postion, though I have been adjusting it to no avail.......

Any ideas????

Since most the folks who claim the solution to our problem is to "clean the carb" I reckon ANOTHER CLEANING will be in order. I'm gonna strip the carb down and chuck it all in a can of solvent for a week then blast it with some air. What the hell-can't hurt...
