Default honda 10hp stalling problem

1980ish honda B100L on a sailboat was supposed to work perfectly ..would die at high speed after 15-30 seconds when i first used it...fiddled with the carb screws & eventually got it to idle without stalling while pushing the boat, but would still stall at full throttle...took it to get "fixed"...they changed the carb...but it operated the same...early spring i discovered that pumping the priming bulb would alleviate the stalling problem..this was a new bulb...changed that & the fuel hose, even changed the tank, but no change so again took it to get "fixed" thinking it was the fuel pump..the old one was apparently in bad shape , tho in spite of that at low speed it had been running fine with the old carb... the new one didn't come with a gasket but it seemed to work better tho splattered fuel everywhere , so gasket was made & solved the splatter problem, but not the stalling problem..squeezing the priming bulb keeps her going &/or brings her back to life just before it stalls...when started it will not slow to idle ( it will die when slowed to SHIFT) before shifting into gear hence puts alot of stress on the shear pin..yesterday i discovered that it would run at idle only if the choke was left out..it would idle last year with the old carb but without the choke pulled out....was thinking about putting the old carb back on, or taking it again to a repair place, maybe one that deals only with honda..my most recent repair guy has washed his hands of this case....ANY IDEAS??

sounds like need to clean carb and make sure all fuel hose connections and clamp are tight.

Default honda b100 stalling

My honda B100 will start up and only run for 3-5 seconds. The motor has been sitting for a while. It starts with the choke on and then stalls, it will also start without the choke and still stall after 3-5 seconds. Any suggestions?

Rick

What is the serial number or year of this motor and does it have the inline fuel filter between the fuel pump and the carb? I would recommend adding one if it doesn't have it.
Also, along the lines of boats.net suggestion, I have had this problem occur before if 1) Fuel line is not clamped tight at the fuel fitting that clips onto the engine, and 2) Replace the o-ring inside that fuel connector AND, IMPORTANT, use only the HONDA connector, not Johnson / Evinrude or yamaha even though they will fit, they don't fit right and don't have the right size o-ring! Sometimes you get away with it and sometimes you have the problem you're experiencing because it doesn't seal.
Good luck.

Rick: Clean the carb thoroughly and it will probably run like a champ again.
Good luck.

I believe its a 1986. Funny you mention the fuel clip. I bought a new one at the Honda deal and the package says johnson/evenrude on it. I questioned it and he said it would be fine.

I will replace the clip and also clean the carb. I will keep you guy's posted on the results.

Thanks for the help!

Default B100 won't idle

It running great now that I've got the correct fuel connector on and cleaned tha carb again. Now I can not get it to idle. If I keep the RPM's up it runs great.

Any thought?

If you have already tried adjusting the slow speed (idle) mixture screw, check the float level. It's important. You'll have to pull the carb off again and check it. If float level is too high, it will run rich at idle and want to die, but clear out at higher speeds because you're using more fuel (it isn't building up and causing it to run so rich). I can't remember the spec, but can look in the Honda manual later.
