grinding into gear

Hello all.
I run a pair of 150 vtec 2008. One will not stop grinding and jumping out of gear, either forward or reverse depending on adjustments made with the gear cables ( which are new as i thought this would be a cure! )
Is there an adjustment which can be made other than with the controls and cables to allow greater travel on the gear linkage? ( if that is what it is called! ) Thanks

May be a problem in gearcase, change gearcase oil and look to see if any metal is on bottom drain screw magnet, metal in oil or water in oil. Any of those would be signs of damage inside gearcase.
