Default Fuel Pump BF100 confused

I have a Pre -1997 BF100 Long Shaft outboard and ordered a fuel pump through boats.net. In installation the pump will not directly "set" into place. The metal pump plunger (shaft) on the back of the fuel assembly seems too long. It fits the hole but will not go all the way in. Am I missing a step in the installation or do I have the wrong part?

Recheck serial number, it may be wrong fuel pump.

Push it down! The plunger is spring loaded, that's what keeps the plunger against the rocker arm that drives it! Probably correct pump, but the screws will pull it down and compress the spring in the plunger.
Good luck.
