Default Fresh Water Flush

We have Honda 40A on our sailboat and are planning to start an extended cruise, at the beginning of the year. Most of the time, while cruising, we will be on the hook and only plan to spend a couple of days at a marina per month.

Q: Given the above, how often should we flush our 40A with fresh water ?

Also, we are currently replacing the water pump and thermostat.

Q: Is there any reason we can't back flush the cooling system, with fresh water, via the thermostat?

Thanks in advance!!!
