Default BF90A stuck in neutral

I had my Scout Sportfish out yesterday, with a 1996 Honda BF90A four stroke. When starting, I pushed the throttle button on the remote control to go into neutral to start. The BF90A started, no problem, but wouldn't come out of neutral in either forward or reverse. I stopped and started a number of times, worked the throttle button to try and engage and it remains stuck in neutral. My guess is it's probably a lubrication issue. I bought the boat and motor about a month ago. It's seen little use but was probably used in salt water in the 90's. This is the 4th time I've had it out and have never had a problem with starting or shifting.
Thanks for any advise.

Default Problem solved

I shot some lube into the lever shaft in the remote control after removing the button assembly, then worked the shift side remote control cable from the engine while moving the throttle and the gear shift pin locked into the control wheel in the remote control, moving it out of neutral. It now goes in and out of neutral when the button assembly is pushed in, as it's supposed to function.
