Default BF 50 difficulty shifting

Last summer i noticed that i was having difficulty shifting from neutral into reverse on my 2006 BF50. From neutral into Forward was smooth, but going into reverse it would slam into gear which doesn't feel right. It feels as though something is out of adjustment but i have no idea where or what to check and thought i would get some opinions here before take it into a shop. any ideas? thanks in advance for your help!

Disconnect shift cable from shift linkage on engine, see if shifts ok by hand. Shift motor into neutral and put control box in neutral, adjust shift cable end to fit back on shifter.

So yesterday i had the motor running, disconnected the shift linkage and moved the lever manually into reverse to find the same "grrrrrr-clunk" shifting that i have been experiencing. This motor is only 3yrs old with minimal use so i am a little worried as to what the problem is. i played around with the shift linkage adjustment and was able to get a little better shifting but not as smooth as i would like. Is there any more adjustments i can check before i make a shop appointment? I know taking it to a shop is the best bet, but i'm not looking forward to paying $100 an hour to have them adjust something i could have done myself. anyways, i'd appreciate any input! thanks in advance.

You can check the oil in gearcase, if has metal on drain plug or in oil then it does have a problem inside gearcase.
