Default B100S Impeller Change/Reassembly

Purchased a 1983 (I believe thats the right year) B100s and the previous owner told me that it is time to change the impeller. Went ahead the did myself. Was able to follow the directions on several posts on here to assist. But did come to a stall...

In putting it back together, I cannot for the life of me figure out how the shift rod is supposed to align itself with the shift shaft. Whether I put it in reverse, neutral or fwd, the holes just dont line up to where I can insert the pin back in place.

One thing I did note is when I drop the lower housing, the shift rod can in one of two positions - presuming down is reverse and up is forward. I tried in both settings making sure that it coincided with the shift shaft gear. From what I have read, the pin is supposed to just slide in. I was only able to get it to slide in but at that position, (reverse), the shift rod was in reverse (lowered) while the shift rod joint was in neutral. As a result, if I try to switch to revers, it wont allow it to go any further because the shift rod is already in reverse.

Hope this makes sense to someone. Ive been working on this seemingly simple issue for 3 days now.

Thanks in advance.

No one has any input? Is it possible that shift rod is out of alignment and needs to be sync'd ? I have the manual - but there is nothing related to this troubleshooting in there.

As long as you didn't pull shaft shaft out of gearcase it should align back up.
