I have a 1985 BF50F-LA 5hp.
When inspecting the fuel pump diaphragm, am I just looking for a hole or tear, or is there something else to consider about it's condition?
What function does the diaphragm assembly perform? #13 on this diagram http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Ho...TOR/parts.html How can I tell if the dashpot check valve is installed in the correct orientation and working properly? #24 of same diagram.

Yes look for holes in diaphram or if rubber is distorted or streached out of position.
The dashpot is to bring rpm's down slow when return throttle to idle.
