Angry 2005 BF 225 stalling problem

I have a 2005 BF 225 which has an intermittant stalling problem. Usually when throttling down and occasionally when running on plane it just quits. It always starts right back up...so far. It happens at least once each time I take it out. I have had it in to two different Honda dealers who couldn't find anything wrong and no codes triggered. I have replaced the two fuel filters, water fuel separator and spark plugs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Anybody know of any good Honda service techs in Michigan?
Thanks, Dave

Thanks for the response Matt. Was your problem intermittent or did it just quit on you?

Thanks,
Dave

Default Fuel line

It was an intermitten problem at first, then after it weakened enough it became much more prevelent and I limped in at 12 mph. engine would just quit but remained running often at idle.Trust me, start small. I took mine in, they couldn't repeat it, nor diagnose it. Meanwhile in the shop had $1200 of warranty work done for $0. I happened to have a friend that races street drag bikes that diagnosed the problem.

I'm having real issues now one year later but the engine battery light/bell goes off and there is ZERO juice to the engine. dead. then after fiddleing around starts back up but dies at idle. last Thursday went out to Stellwagon Bank 43 miles out everything was fine. i need answers now. this stinks

Default fuel line

The symptoms you describe match up pretty close to my problem. I may go ahead and replace the fuel line and see what happens. I appreciate your response.

As far as your other problem I won't be much help to you. I've been a Mercury man for many years and have only owned this Honda for a year. I was under the impression they were good reliable motors but after my experience and reading the posts here about the odd ball problems I'm beginning to have my doubts. Good luck to you in diagnosing your problem.

Did u hear any alarm sound when engine stalled ?

It is hard to find the problem without a look,, but
I assume that your vst is clogged up with dirts or water.
Find the good honda dealer and have them fix it.

If you heard alarm when engine stalled out, you need to take it to
Honda dealer, have them check your thrust bearing end play.

Sounds like this may have happened to you before. I took it to a dealer to check it out and it acted up for them. The diagnosis was a bad thrust bearing and excessive crankshaft movement. The recommended fix is a new power head. I am totally disappointed that a 6 year old motor with 390 hours on it would need major engine repair. It was maintained properly and not abused and this happened, must be I got a lemon.

I.m sorry to hear that,
I used to work at honda marine dealer as a mechanic.

I had few customers that had same problem.
Ur 225 engine is pretty much same engine as V6 accord and pilot engine ,
But car engines sit horizontaly ,marine engine sits up side down so, crank moves Up side down as you go. That,s how crank thrust bearing fails.
honda has upgraded their thrust bearings, if i remember correctly
They were ****en color.
When i was at honda dealer, our main customers were cops and harbor patrols. They got 4 safe boats that had twin honda 225 on it. They almost
Put 3,000 hours for 2 -3 years period ,still ran fine, i mean Once ur engine is fixed right.
It.ll be ok.. I work at suzuki marine dealer, but i like honda way batter than
Suzuki. I wish you good luck.

Thanks for the boost of confidence. I've always heard good things about Honda O/Bs and was very excited when I found the boat I wanted with a Honda on it. As I said before only to be disappointed. They do make a heck of a generator! Mine is a 2005 and they modifed their design of the thrust bearing in 2007 but unfortunately there was no service bulletin issued for this problem. Hopefully I can convince the folks at Honda to work with me on this one.
