  • Help with tach

I have a 1995 Honda BF50A remote. The old tach does not work. I tried a new tach, still doesn't work. I have 5 wires that attach to the tach. 2-black, 1-red/white, 1-Black/yellow, 1-Grey. I tested the wires and I'm getting 12 volts from the Black/yellow wire. Not getting anything from the other wires. Help!

Gray wire is tach signal would need to test voltage with a peak reading voltmeter to see if voltage increases as engine rpm's increases.

Check continuity on grey in main engine harness to engine, check wiring on engine.

I have the same engine and had the same problem. It was the charging coil under the flywheel. Remove the 4 bolts from the flywheel and give it a good tug. Beneath the flywheel are the charging coil and exciter coil. Charging coil has two linked together by a jumper wire between the two pickups. One of mine was burned black.
You can also omhs out the coil but I do not know the resistance to check for.
          Good Luck!
